If you’ve just landed in Southwest Florida—welcome! Whether you’re here for the sunshine, the beaches, or a slower pace of life, you're in for something special. This slice of Florida is more than palm trees and pretty views (though we have plenty of those). It's a place where small-town charm meets coastal beauty, and where every day can feel like a vacation—if you know where to look. In this blog, we will be sharing everything you need to know to settle in and thrive here—from classic landmarks to hidden gems, seasonal tips, local traditions, and even a favorite recipe or two. 🌴 Not-to-Be-Missed Favorites Start your Southwest Florida experience with these staples: Sanibel & Captiva Islands – Perfect for a day of shelling, biking, and spectacular sunsets. Downtown Fort Myers – A mix of historic architecture, art walks, and riverside dining. Edison & Ford Winter Estates – An iconic piece of local history and beautifully preserved gardens. Matlacha – A quirky little fishing village with galleries, seafood shacks, and plenty of color. 🏡 Living Like a Local Some quick tips to help you adjust: Air conditioning is your best friend – but don’t forget ceiling fans for airflow. Everything grows faster here – from your lawn to mildew. Stay on top of maintenance! Hurricane season runs June–November – Keep your go-bag and storm shutters ready. 🍤 Taste of Florida: Easy Shrimp Boil Try this quick weeknight classic: 1 lb large shrimp (shell-on) 2 ears corn, halved 1 lb baby potatoes 1 lemon, halved Old Bay seasoning Boil potatoes and corn first, then add shrimp and lemon slices. Season generously, drain, and serve with melted butter and crusty bread. Simple, fresh, and oh-so-coastal. Whether you're here year-round or part-time, this blog is here to help you make Southwest Florida feel like home. We will share more soon—from household hacks to weekend escapes. Until then, take a breath, feel the warm breeze, and enjoy every moment of discovering your new favorite place. Welcome home!

Fl orida is home to some of the most unique wildlife in the country. From the quiet, elusive Florida panther to the prehistoric-looking alligator, our state's natural beauty comes with a responsibility: learning how to live safely and respectfully alongside the animals that were here long before us. Whether you live in a suburban neighborhood or near a preserve, here's what you need to know about coexisting with Florida’s iconic wildlife. 🐊 Alligators: Respect the Water Alligators live in nearly every body of freshwater in Florida, including ponds, canals, and lakes—even retention ponds in neighborhoods. Living Safely with Alligators: Never feed them – It’s illegal and dangerous. Keep your distance – At least 30 feet away at all times. Keep pets leashed – Don’t let them near water’s edge. Be alert at dawn and dusk – Gators are most active during these times. 🐆 Florida Panthers: Rare but Protected Florida panthers are an endangered species primarily found in South Florida, including the Everglades and Big Cypress regions. Sightings are rare, but they do happen—especially in more rural or wooded areas. Living Safely Near Panthers: Don’t leave pet food outdoors – It attracts smaller animals, which attract panthers. Keep pets and livestock secure – Use enclosed pens or keep pets indoors at night. Never approach – If you see a panther, stay calm, face it, and slowly back away. Don’t run. Report sightings – Especially if a panther seems unafraid of humans. 🦝 Other Wildlife to Watch For Florida is also home to: Black bears – Especially in Central and North Florida. Coyotes – Found in urban and rural areas. Snakes – Most are harmless, but some are venomous. 🌴 Living in Harmony with Nature Wildlife sightings are a reminder that we live in a shared habitat. The goal isn't to eliminate contact—but to reduce conflict. With a little planning and respect, Floridians can safely enjoy the richness of our natural world while protecting both people and animals.
